I was going to stay out of this one, but seeing some of the replies I feel it is necessary to reply as well. We (Powerwatch) are getting almost as many complaints about concentration loss, forgetfulness and headaches from frequent users of the NEW DIGITAL cordless (DECT) phones as we get from GSM digital cell-phone users. This is probably because, although they work at a low fixed power (0.25W) they use a GSM lookalike chipset and pulse on and off in the same way. They mainly run at 1.88 to 2.0 GHz. In practice, although GSM phones can operate at up to 2W, in many areas they only need to use about 0.25W so there probably isn't much difference. It is the pulsing that seems to be the problem. DECT became an official pan-European Standard (ETS300-175) in August 1992 and versions of it are now on sale around the world. It seems to have effectively become the de-facto standard for digital cordless phones. We strongly recommend people to use digital cordless phones only when they HAVE to (eg in workshop down a LONG garden) and use an ordinary old fashioned wired handset for most calls and especially for long chats. We have no adverse reports from users of old analogue cordless phones such as those the earlier replies have been about.
