Oxygen is a highly toxic substance, but living beings on Planet Earth
have evolved ways to "tame" it so it does not destroy us. I doubt
that ozone is formed; to do "free radical damage" it is only necessary
that nascent oxygen be formed. This can happen chemically, or from
ionization after irradiation by ionizing radiation. It probably does
not happen in the air in the lungs, but in the tissues of the body.
Does this also happen under conditions of, say, microwave irradiation?
I think it may. Since the early 1970s the physics literature has
contained reports of ionization produced by microwaves; most people
are not aware of this. Both theory and experiment have been
published, so it is pretty well accepted by now. (The ionization is
accomplished in a step-wise fashion, as microwave photons don't have
enough energy to produce ionization in a single step.)
However, the physics work is not obviously applicable to biological
systems! So we cannot say for sure that this work by physicists is
applicable to the question of how microwaves cause damage in living
creatures.
I think it probably will be found to be applicable in some way, but
that lies in the future. For now, I can say only that probably other
chemicals are involved in addition to oxygen, and the mechanism
probably does involve free radicals that are somehow generated by the
EMF (microwaves would do it more strongly than radio waves of lower
frequency).
I don't think ozone is actually generated, either in the lungs or in
the body. But nascent oxygen may well be, and it is highly reactive
and will cause damage of the free radical type, I believe. -- Marjorie
