Hi folks:

I think this is a particularly HOT item..... To me, it is the kind of
convincing evidence -- evidence that counts in court!!! -- which we seem
destined NOT to get (in **public** statements) from our learned science
colleagues..... Except for a few..... I am thinking about the group of
scientists in the U.K. who recently announced that they were "curtailing"
their own personal use of cell phones (and advising their families to do
the same).....

That's powerful evidence..... So is the report below -- which I would
like to dedicate to the memory of Lee Atwater (Republican) and Mike Synar
(Democrat)......

Cheerio..... (Thanks, Robert!!!)......

.........DO YOU KNOW OF OTHERS WHO SHOULD BE ON THIS LIST?????........

Cell-phone safety at issue in Italy
by Philip Willan, IDG News Service\Rome Bureau
May 20, 1999

ROME (05/20/99) - A major Italian company headed by the former chief
executive of the nation's second mobile phone operator is supplying its
employees with cellular telephones that can be fitted with separate
headsets -- and Italians are wondering what hidden truths the CEO knows
about cell-phone safety.

Europe's third-largest manufacturer of electrical appliances, Merloni
Elettrodomestici SpA, has decided to supply its employees with dual-band
cellphones capable of operating with a microphone and headphones for safety
reasons, a company spokesman confirmed today. The news was given particular
prominence by some Italian newspapers because Merloni's CEO Francesco Caio
was formerly CEO of Omnitel Pronto Italia SpA.

"Caio's experience makes him particularly aware of the need to take
precautionary measures, although, as far as I know, no one knows exactly
what risks are associated with the prolonged use of mobile phones," said the
spokesman, who asked not to be identified by name. "The decision follows a
major press campaign in Italy on the dangers of electromagnetic waves. Caio
is very sensitive to the problems of health and the environment and some of
our employees had begun to express doubts and worries."

Studies into the consequences of the prolonged use of mobile phones have
highlighted potential risks such as cancer, short-term memory loss and the
mild warming of the brain. A government decree passed in 1995 instructed
Italians to keep the antenna of their cellphone at least 20 centimeters (8
inches) away from their body. No explanation was given as to how they were
to conduct a conversation at such a distance, a feat now made possible by
equipping the devices with a headset.
