Hi all, I'm new to this list and I'll let you know why I'm here. Frankly, I'm concerned about the all the radiation in my apartment. I live on the top floor of an apartment building in a bachelor. Along with many appliances I have an old Mac computer with an old colour monitor and a vey old RCA TV that I've recently noticed keeps glowing in certain spots on the screen after it is turned off (this can't be good!). Oh yes...and I also should mention that I live directly under the mechanical room or main exhaust system of the building which I figure... also can't be good! I only became concerned about all the emf around me when I began shopping for a new computer and I had asked the salesperson if monitors these days are considered safe. To my surprise he answered "no" and began to explain to me how they operate. I was baffled and surprised at how honest this salesperson seemed to be. Surely he didn't think I was going to purchase a whole new computer system with one of these new flat panel displays that would cost thousands when I had initially told him I was only interested in an i-mac...now did he? I became very discouraged when I began trying to find out from the internet whether VDTs are safe. At first I read all this stuff about how all of these official organizations support the use of VDTs because research has not proved that they're a health hazard. But this didn't sit well with me...afterall...research hasn't proved that they're safe either. Then I began to read stuff by less biased individuals who wrote that there could possibly be a health hazard ...and today I finally discovered an article on wireless technolgy by Charles Moore of Macopinion that made me see the light...or in other words, avoid the light ...where VDTs are concerned. But I still have questions left unanswered even after spending hours and hours on the internet and hopefully you people may be able to help me. I've been having a really difficult time trying to figure out if the new flat panel displays are actually safe. Are they any safer than the low-emissions cathode ray type displays? By the way, I actually called Apple to find out if their VDTs adhere to the Swedish standard for low radiation emissions and in response I was e-mailed a tech file titled "Apple Does Not Release ELF Radiation Information". I was really put off by this. Are all computer companies like this? I've heard that IBM actually has low-emisson VDTs... I don't understand why the articles I've read on the internet suggest laptops as being a safe alternative to VDTs while in the same articles such appliances as televisions, VDTs, hair dryers, dial-face electric clocks are mentioned as being potential health hazards. I mean, even if the display of a laptop is safe, doesn't the fact that your hands (and therefore entire body) being much closer to the actual body of the computer present a health risk??? I've also been wondering if larger screen VDTs produce more or stronger emissions than the smaller ones. I mean wouldn't you have to sit further back from a larger monitor? I've read conflicting views on this and to say the least...I'm frustrated. I also need to purchase a new TV for my limited space and feel that although I would like to get a larger screen...a smaller one would be safer ...am I right? And how far are you supposed to sit from a TV anyway??? I would truly appreciate any info or advise as I would love to make a decision soon as to what to purchase so that I may get rid of both my old computer monitior and TV.
