For Immediate release Contact: Libby Kelley 415 892-1863 May 13, 2000 Dr. Robert O. Becker to be heard on Radio Show, Sunday, May 14th Sunday night, May 14, the internationally recognized Dr. Robert O. Becker will be the featured speaker on Art Bell's Dreamland's Show. The AM talk radio show, which has a regular live listenership of over 4 million people, will lead with a recently taped interview with Becker as part of a major three hour program devoted solely to one of the most pressing and serious environmental health concerns of our time --- the effects of rapidly increasing levels of electropollution from man-made sources of radiation on the biosphere. The first hour of the show will begin about 6:10 p.m. pacific time with Dreamland host, Linda Howe. According to Dr. Louis Slesin, editor of Microwave News, "Dr. Becker is one of the founders and leading lights of modern electrobiology." His research contributions in the field of biological and regeneration are internationally recognized. He is a foremost leader in redefining the established mechanistic understanding of the body. He was twice nominated for the Nobel Prize. He is the author of many books and articles, including "The Body Electric" and, in 1990 "Cross Currents; The Perils of ElectroPollution". The second two hours will feature live interviews with B. Blake Leavitt, medical writer and author of "Electromagnetic Fields; A Consumer's Guide to the Issue and How to Protect Ourselves" and, Libby Kelley, Executive Director of the Ad Hoc Association of Parties Concerned About the FCC's Health and Safety Rules (an initiative of the Council on Wireless Technology Impacts. Linda Howe and Dreamland Co-host Whitley Strieber will conduct the live show. Kelley's organization has a major regulatory challenge underway against the Federal Communications Commission. The major legal issues are related to inadequate protection of public health and the environment and preemption of certain state authorities on wireless facility siting. Ms. Leavitt and Ms. Kelley will be prepared to discuss their perspectives on the problems and concerns related to the new and emerging wireless technologies based on the science, the public policies and, most importantly what citizens can do. The discussion will include the newly released UK scientific report, federal legislation introduced by the Vermont Congressional delegation, Senator Tom Hayden's bill in the California State legislature on cell phone safety, the status of the citizen led challenge against the FCC and, the need for more precaution in use of wireless technologies, particularly around children. The show will be broadcast to listeners across the U.S. and Canada. The show will be broadcast live on the internet. A Real Audio version of the show will be available on the Linda Howe's Earthfiles website the following day. Art Bell and Howe have covered the issue three times since the beginning of the year, including prior interviews with Dr. Neil Cherry and Libby Kelley. Channel 31, the local public service channel, will be showing "uW/cm2 Broadcast Blues" two times in the next two weeks. This excellent one-hour film documentary describes the situation faced by more than 9,000 residents in Golden, Colorado on Lookout Mountain. Lookout Mountain has become the preferred co-location site for over 450 towers and antennas. Local residents have experienced health problems, blanket interference with their electrical equipment and have measured exposures in excess of the FCC legal threshold for safe human exposure. The broadcast industry does not plan to move, in fact they are seeking to add more antennas for high density TV antennas which would double the radiation exposure conditions. Because this area is now defined as an "antenna farm", the FCC has not intervened despite several appeals by residents and local officials. Since the film was released, Jefferson County and the Colorado State Legislature have notified the FCC that this "antenna farm" violates states rights and forced tower siting violates the 10th amendment. This matter will be litigated, and in time, the towers may be moved. Meanwhile local residents are living with the knowledge that a certain percentage of them may become ill due to chronic exposure to low level radiation. Keep your eyes on the horizon. This could happen on a hilltop or ridge in your area. You can get this film shown on your local community access station. f you miss these dates or do not live in Southern Marin County, you can still order this film by going to the C.A.R.E website.
