Hi everybody:
For some of you this message will repeat what Cathy has already sent.
I am repeating it to a longer "concealed" group because I want to assure
that it gets wide circulation -- particularly to the "press" people. (You
better get on the ball!! This story is getting way ahead of you!!!)
First, a couple short comments. For the EMF "pros," it will be no
surprise that "natural light" is included in the "suspect" category below.
The suspect melatonin hormone mechanism (produced by the pineal gland) is
also affected by light. The difference is, of course, light has always
been a part of our environment. "Alternating current" EMF has not.....
Second, it is encouraging to see this group of _genuine_ EMF "pros"
step forward and be counted on this subject. I know about half of them.
They are noted for their cautious and thorough scientific reputations ...
which they would not lightly put at risk...... All of them have many
years of background on this subject.
Charles Graham, for example, presented a most interesting paper at the
San Diego Meeting. I found it interesting because I know how many times
his research has come up without results that show an EMF effect. Yet,
he has persisted because he is aware of the strong "suggestive evidence"
that others have been finding -- in the laboratory as well as in
epidemiological studies.
At San Diego, he reported that he found no effects (to sleep behavior)
from "constant" (sinusoidal wave at 60 Hz) EMF -- but when he exposed
_live human subjects_ to "intermittent" exposure, he detected significant
results...... Other laboratory studies have also found that the key may
be "intermittent" exposure. [Reba Goodman and Martin Blank] Somehow
that should not surprise us ... the "real world" of EMF exposure is
usually "intermittent" and not a constant (time weighted average, TWA) 60
Hz ... as too many in the research community have been applying it.....
(Guru says: it is hard to identify a more unrealistic, unscientific
"assumption" than the TWA approach which has controlled EMF research
since EPRI first suggested it.......... Unless, of course, one would
count the even more erroneous assumption that EMF = MF (magnetic field)
... as we repeatedly were being told by presenters at the San Diego
Meeting........ That assumption leaves out at least a half dozen other
potentially important metrics, including the transients that can be
maximized during electrical storms!!!!!!!)
Finally, it may be appropriate to note that USA TODAY (30/10/97, in a
story by Steve Sternberg) reported that researchers on the chemical side
have recently declared "chemicals" (like pesticides and industrial
chemicals) "do not appear to raise a woman's risk of breast cancer."
Again ... not a surprise to the EMF community which has been watching the
evidence accumulate with regard to the EMF/breast cancer association.....
Cheerio...........
P.S. If you know of others who you think should be added to this
"concealed" list, just let me know....... I will soon be commenting on
the San Diego Meeting.

Subject: Panel Links EMF Exposure To Breast Cancer
November 20, 1997
In a press statement released yesterday evening from Washington, D.C.
during the Workshop on EMF, Light-At-Night and Human Breast Cancer, an
international panel representing leaders in the scientific arena concluded
that "electromagnetic fields (EMF) and environmental light should be
considered potential risk factors for breast cancer, based on existing
scientific evidence."

country and city codes if outside the US), or physical address if no fax is
avaialble. The document is not E-Mailable.
