.......Sounds Great!!! Activists is a "good word" in San Francisco....

For everybody: Chris mentions guru's latest, the "Open Letter" to the
folks dealing with the Lookout Mountain situation..... That "epistle" has
been further edited and refined, and now appears as the lead item under
"current messages" on the guru's website......

Also, a number of you have asked recently about finding guru's archives
(maintained on the WAVEGUIDE site by Robert Bedard). Probably the
easiest way to get there is from the homepage of guru's website --
-- go to the bottom of the page and you will find a direct
link there.....

Cheerio.....

Dear Roy:

Congratulations on your forthright open letter regarding Lookout
Mountain. For the moment we have a chance to express our views here on
the Sutro Tower antenna cluster.

Two supervisors, including our perhaps to be successful write-in
candidate for mayor (there's democracy in action for you), Tom Ammiano,
are calling for a detailed examination of Sutro Tower including the
actual and potential health impact from microwave radiation. What
follows below is the full text of an e-mail notice I just received.

I think it would be great for our supervisors to hear the support of
others from your forum wherever they live. Phone numbers, all 415 area
code:

Tom Ammiano, 554-5144
Alicia Becerril, 554-6488
Sue Bierman, 554-6661
Amos Brown, 554-7601
Leslie Katz, 554-5335
Barbara Kaufman, 554-4880
Mark Leno, 554-7734
Gavin Newsom, 554-5942
Mabel Teng, 554-4981
Michael Yaki, 554-7901
Leland Yee, 554-7752

Very best always,

Christopher Beaver

Here's the notice as it was received:

Subject:
                 Support Sutro Tower Task Force
       Date:

          To:
                 Tower List:

Good news!

Supervisors Ammiano and Leno have co-sponsored a piece of legislation to
create a Sutro Tower Health And Safety Task Force
to make policy recommendations to the mayor and board of supervisors.

(1) PLEASE - call or write to those supervisors whose support we need:
particularly Mabel Teng, Alicia Becerril and Gavin
Newsom. It wouldn't hurt to contact Leslie Katz, Michael Yaki, Amos
Brown and Barbara Kaufman as well, but we probably
have more reason to hope for support from the first group.

We probably need one or two more votes - so obtaining votes from several
more supervisors is important.

(2) IF YOU CAN: Attend a meeting of the Board of Supervisors Finance
Committee, which can provide the necessary funding for
the task force.
Members: Ammiano, Yee, Bierman
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 10 am, City Hall Room 263
PURPOSE: Ensure funding for the Task Force
We need a few people to speak about why this is important for the city.

(3) Suggest that people call the Sutro Tower Hotline (77-TOWER) or check
the website.

* * * *

This task force will enable our neighborhood representatives to be in
the room and to talk with all relevant experts and
decision-makers in the formulation of city policy for the tower. We
asked for this - now we need to get the votes.

The text of the resolution is available by on our website www.sutro.org.

* * * *

The resolution summarizes the full range of hazards presented by the
tower, including all that we have mentioned over the past
two years. It will be composed of members from: the City Attorney's Code
Enforcement Task Force, the director of the Mayor's
Office of Emergency Services or his/her appointed representative, the
Zoning Administrator of the San Francisco Planning
Department, the director of the Department of Building Inspection or
his/her appointed representative, the director of the San
Francisco Water Department or his/her appointed representative, the
Chief of the San Francisco Fire Department or his/her
appointed representative, delegates from UCSF's children's oncology
research program, the Twin Peaks Improvement
Association, the Midtown Terrace Homeowners Association, representatives
of Sutro Tower Incorporated who are authorized to
represent that entity, the three representatives from the Structural
Advisory Committee which convened March 13 and March
19, 1998 and three (3) members who comprise the Peer Review Group which
reviewed the Dynamic Analysis.

The Task Force will address all the major areas of concern that have
been brought up, including but not limited to:

A. Emergency Response and Follow Through

B. Fire Mitigation Efforts

C. Telecommunications Planning and whether or not the tower is necessary

D. Potential Long Term Health Risks From Exposure To Radiation

E. Seismic Safety and Structural Integrity

The Task Force will issue a comprehensive report detailing progress in
the focus areas, addressed above, six months after its
formation.
