We know he is somewhere between England and Italy, and we are trying to locate him to see if he could detour to Canada (at the expense of the City of Toronto). We have emailed back and forth about the possibility of him coming this direction, but the City of Toronto moved up the date of critical meetings with the Health Dept. and Industry Canada, and we are hoping he can accomodate the new dates. The following brings everyone up to date on the Toronto situation, and shows why it is SO important we contact Dr. Cherry. Toronto Overview-November 1999 For those of you who may not have been following this closely for the past eight months, some of us have been trying to draw attention to the body of scientific research that suggests that the microwave radiation, especially digitally pulsed signals, that are emitted by cell base stations, may have harmful effects on human health. The telecom industry has been denying the validity of this research for years, but now officials in Toronto have started to take notice and are attempting to act. A year ago, Councillor John Adams moved that the Health Department investigate a policy of "prudent avoidance" in light of the uncertainty surrounding the safety of cell transmitters. That initiative was given further impetus in the spring, when, aided by Councillor Minnan-Wong, residents around the Leslie Street Water Tank brought the issue to public attention, by demanding that the city terminate its agreements which leased that property, with no notice to residents, to two suppliers who would install a total of twelve transmitters within 50 feet of neighbouring houses. The situation in Toronto is coming to a head. The Health Department, having done its own review of research, has submitted a report to the Board of Health which does call for a policy of "prudent avoidance" that would include a consultative protocol for the siting of any new transmitters, plus an output limit for all sites ofone hundredth of what the current federal Safety Code 6 allows. (Let me know if you do not have this report and would like it emailed to you) At the Board meeting on November 15, the telecom industry was out in force, ready with their big guns (the #1 lobbyist from Ottawa was there) to blow the report away as eccentric and excessive. Fortunately for us, Industry Canada asked the Board for a deferral to the next meeting in order to arrange "informal discussions" with the health department, Health Canada and the industry. Thanks to Councillor Adams, this process will now include citizen representation. If you would like to be part of it, the working date for a meeting right now is November 22. I could use one or two more Toronto residents at this meeting to back me up. The next step, and the critical one, will be the Board of Health meeting on December 6. Once again the industry, quite possibly with the backing of Health Canada, will try to discredit the report and show that the policy it proposes will be unworkable. I am arranging for deposistions, possibly in person, by some world class experts who will defend the report and may even suggest that it does not go far enough.
