When (and if) we ever get the EMF matter "on track" -- my next list could be one to defend the rights of property owners..... Those are being encroached upon with wild abandon by a society that measures all things in terms of "expediency" for the moment's gratification -- no long range vision at all!!.... (Then, of course, there is the U.S. Federal Tax Code -- that needs "fixing." Or the U.S. health system??? I will simply have a long menu of potential "causes" when [and if...] EMF is ever "fixed.") Cheerio...... A "frightening" tale below. Still unanswered, who is fighting to protect the whales???? I believe the Low Frequency Sonar program is based there. Here in the San Juans there have been several odd beachings and deaths of Orca whales. The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor could fill you in on the particulars. In 1994 I was building a house on the south end of Lopez, about 8 miles across the water from NAS Whidbey. I had lived on another part of the property for 7 years. One day a terrible, low trembling roar began and it didn't stop. It would go on for 8-12 hours per day. I called the base. They said nothing had changed. They were doing nothing. Finally after weeks of this I was able to get my Congressman ( Al Swift) to contact the base. They finally admitted that their test cell had broken and they were pointing their jet engines out to sea (directly at us) and were testing them. In the mean time I was becoming fairly frantic. I found that I could be on my property for about 3 hours . After 3 hours mentally I was losing it. The Low Frequency I was feeling felt like my organs were vibrating. When I recall it I can still feel the fear of not being able to get away from that noise. I contacted acoustic experts everywhere. Finally I ended up with a Boeing engineer who talked about the use of Low Frequency Sonar being used as a weapon. We tried everything from legal avenues to political pressure to embarassment to make them stop. I ended up abandoning my property. . . the house is still unfinished. I live on another part of the island ( 20 miles from the base). The noise finally did stop . . . I have always wondered if the broken test cell was really the whole reason for the noise. I learned in that encounter that the Navy has no problem lying to civilians. They view everything in terms of numbers. If 25 % of the public is upset about noise, no problem, unless you are one of the 25%. There has been some press on the sonar program locally. I'll see if I can locate it. What Ms. Schmidt wrote about "disregard for whale and marine population" seems plausable to me. . . since I know from my continuing experience with them that that describes their position regarding the civilian population. Thanks for what you do. I deeply appreciate the quality of conversation and questioning that you put out on the mailing list. It certainly assists tiny groups like ours!
