   From: "Hans Karow"
     To: "Roy Beavers"

 Roy,

recently we won a cellular tower fight without fighting.

Two letters to the Editor of the local weekly newspaper, a simple petition with lots of
signatures, a few presentations and the following letter to the wireless company let the
company withdraw their application for a proposed cellular tower on a mountain near to the
core of the Village of Summerland in BC.

The company is however looking for alternative sites near Summerland, and we will be
following Them from mountain to mountain (or church steeples)!

The company (ROGERS WIRELESS) has responded to my letter but avoided to answer the
questions.

Anyone else involved in a cell tower struggle might use the following letter.

If anyone please could check and inform what else the company should be asked.

Hans

letter to a wireless communication company:

Dear Mr. (name of company’s representative)

Re: Proposed wireless communication microwave tower on (name of mountain or other sites)

I recently purchased a small-acreage farm for my future semi-retirement in the proximity
of the region designated for the above-mentioned tower, which l just learned of a few days
ago.

Furthermore, l was informed that there is a coalition petitioning against the installation
of the proposed tower.

In order to get a clear picture, and to find out whether l should be concerned for my
family and others, l kindly ask you to please respond to my questions below as soon as
possible so that l may investigate still further and make an informed decision for myself
in regard to the proposed project.

Questions:

  1. How many feet high will the tower be in the final stage, also considering future
     ‘toppings’?
  2. Please state how many transmitters will be added to the tower shortly after tower
erection ( first two years) and thereafter, how many more are planned to be attached
     to this tower.
  3. Please state for what purpose each of these transmitters is going to be used ( i.e.;
TV, Radio, Cellular phone, Wireless internet, Enhancer of any other type of
communications systems such as fire, ambulance, police dept, or public works dept.)
  4. Will any of the transmitters now, or in the future, also transmit or receive directly
to or from other communication towers and/or communication satellites, including
     those for enhancing purposes?
  5. Please list every single transmitter/enhancer designated to be attached now and in
the future, plus all pertinent data concerning parameters, such as:

          - Frequencies ( including range of frequencies for each transmitter)

          - Maximum allowable out-put (Wattage) for each and every transmitter/enhancer
          now and in the future.

     6. . Please give information as to the location of any presently existing
transmitter towers ( including those installed by other companies), and their
dead spots, within a 10km radius from the core of the city ( school / play
ground / hospital / Main Street).

Also include information on projected plans for applications within the next
          10-15 years.
     7. On a map displaying the serving area to be covered by your proposed tower, please
indicate the presently existing dead spots from which no one can use cellular phones
or other devices. Please classify these either devices which depend on transmitter
towers, and state the company/companies from which they originate.

  8. Which government authority, or any other agency, checks the output and frequency of
each transmitter, and at what intervals are these checks carried out?
  9. Could you please state the closest distance of your proposed tower to the following:

       a. frequently visited public areas ( such as shopping centers, recreational park,
          hiking trails etc.,)
       b. the nearest residential home.
       c. hospital, school, library, university, and playgrounds.

     10. In regard to the above section 7., for each case please state the dose/exposure
as to the specific absorption rate (SAR, unit measure in W/Kg), AND the power density
(indicating the field strength, unit: milliWatts per square centimeter) from

       a. your proposed tower only
       b. from all compounded transmissions of any transmitters, (including radio/TV,
communications satellites, and stealth towers) not limited to the 10 km radius.

     11. Will the proposed tower ever be used for frequency ranges that do not fall under
the country’s/ state’s Safety Code Regulations?
If so, please state those frequencies.
     12. Has your company applied for an environmental assessment of the proposed site
region? If so, would you be so kind as to send me a copy of it as soon as possible.

 13. Are you, or your company, aware of any cases around the globe where transmitter
towers have resulted in property devaluation? If so, please specify these cases.
 14. In case of any possible compensation / liability claims, (other than those due to
damages caused by structural parts of the tower), does your company have coverage in
the event of damages caused now, or at a later date, by electromagnetic radiation
from your transmitters? If so, please state the maximum amount of insurance.

     15. Recently there has been a significant acceleration in worldwide public concern
regarding the dubious safety of wireless technology, therefore I am asking you to
please cite and forward to me all studies that indicate that the particular antenna
and signal design chosen by your company will do no harm to living things, including
human populations irradiated by these signals.

     16. I would also appreciate it if you could indicate any government on this globe
that takes the following stand concerning wireless communication signal’s
     electromagnetic radiation (EMR):

       a. applying the Precautionary Principle in regard to wireless telecommunications
          technology
       b. having regulations in place to protect the health and well-being of their
          citizens.

Please give details of any studies/ reports in this regard.

 17. Please supply any information on what consideration has been given to using
fiber-optic technology as a much safer alternative to wireless methods that involve
     electromagnetic irradiation of the environment.
 18. Please indicate on what journals and other publications your company bases their
position with regards of wireless communication signals and biological effects.
 19. Are there any hidden transmitters (like in church steeples) or stealth towers form
your company or other companies located now and/or proposed within the next 15 years?
     If so, please give details.
