Roy,

I want to add a couple of notes to your report on the ABC Prime Time Show:

The narrators emphasizes concerns about marketing of cell phones to
children and youth. Although there were no recent examples shown, they
used ads from a year ago, such as those using Disney character sheathes and
other cool packaging that appeals to youthful users. They then showed the
"family plan" ads used today, with cell phones cuddling together like a
close family. Everyone knows, kids spend much more time on the phone with
their friends than their parents At the end of tonight's show, the
narrators announced that ABC's parent company - Walt Disney, will be
discontinuing licensing character sheaths for cell phones. Disney added,
"they did not market to any specific age group". I hope Disney's position,
which I applaud, leads to more socially responsible changes in corporate
marketing behavior like this.

I hope ABC will report on how the telecommunications industry is selling
wireless internet equipment for use in America's classrooms. School
districts are on the front lines with this issue and are making decisions
based on high pressure sales campaigns sales to purchase and install this
equipment for use by their children so they won't be left behind in the
21st Century. Over time, the cell phone held by the head may be replaced
with the handheld or portable laptop communicator. Questions about the
safety of using these radiation emitting devices are not being addressed by
wireless manufacturers, carriers and public policy makers. This needs to
be done now before the next generation becomes totally reliant on wireless
communications. As British scientist, Dr. Colin Blakemore said on tonight's
show, young people are going to have a long, total life time of exposure
with cumulative effects.

The narrators call for more precaution due to the recognition there are
scientific studies which show biological harm, even though these studies
need further replication. This is a reasonable approach but will probably
be ignored. You would think our political and corporate leaders do not
understand what the precautionary principle means but that is not true,
Most recently, Dick Cheney was kept at the hospital so his heart condition
could be monitored, as a precautionary measure. I would like to see a
national call to limit use of cell phones by our children and youth and
look after their health and well being, until there is more scientific
certainty. Who knows, one of these children may run for a national office
some day. Let's give them every chance at success in life.
