Beavers" Subject: ELF /VLF long range communications systems Hi Roy (and others on list) I have been interested in a phenonomon known as "the Taos Hum"for some time now and am seeking some information on possible causes. For those of you who may not know of this issue, the "hum" is a low frequency hum which has become a nuisance in many parts of the world and is usually mis-diagnosed as tinitus, an inner ear condition. It is well documented and New Scientist of 27 December 1989 has an article on this, titled: "Low-Frequency'Hum' May Permeate the Environment" Also there is an excellent web site devoted to this phenomonon, search for "Taos Hum", or email the site on taoshum-l@eskimo.com There are probably many sources for this but it seems one possible contributing facter are ELF/VLF long range communications systems, mainly for global submarine underwater communications. With ELF and VLF transmissions the long wavelength allows communications to cover great distances between the surface of the earth and the lower ionosphere. These signals readily penetrate into the ground and oceans. The US Navy web site lists ELF and VLF frequencies under "Navy strategic communications". Does anyone have a list of the different ELF /VLF long range communication systems currently in use since the days of the SANGUINE system. (The intelligence bugs will love this one!) Thanks in advance from Australia.
