Dear Bill, Roy & Roger

London Underground use DC for their trains which does have starting
and stopping transients [!!!!guru...] but not large continous AC fields.

Presumably the substation is taking 33kV AC to the 20kV DC for
the trains, although I thought they had their own power station
to supply their system.

Magnetic fields from substations fall off very quickly (within 10m)
and the main source is the low voltage outfeed cables. I don't
think that you will have a problem, but you should either get the
fields measured or hire a meter (+instructions) and measure them for
yourself. Powerwatch (basically me!) hires out such meters for £30
for a week which measure both electric and magentic fields and the
price also includes advice on the readings you obtain. If you email
me your address I will send you a booking form.

Cogreslab sell some small E&Mfield warning monitors @ c.£80.
The meters we hire are available at £295 +VAT from Perspective
Scientific of 100 Baker Street (0171 486 3867) London.

In my view the danger is greater if you or your wife have a family
history of serious cancer before the age of 60 in your parents and
grandparents.

I advise EVERYBODY to get their E&MFields measured as you will be
surprised what large household sources exist (such as the small
plug transformers used to feed many games (etc) and any mains/battery
radio/tapeplayer always gives off high fields when plugged in even
when not actually playing! Keep all appliances away from beds.

With good wishes
