U.S., industry deal would test impact of chemicals

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The chemical and petroleum industries
agreed Friday to voluntarily test the human health and
environmental effects of the chemicals they produce and make the
results available to the public, officials said.
The industry agreement with the federal government involved
the Environmental Protection Agency, the Environmental Defense
Fund, the Chemical Manufacturers' Association, the American
Petroleum Institute and the Gas Processors Association.
``This major new effort will close a gap in the public's
right-to-know about potential harmful chemicals released into
the air, our land and our water,'' Vice President Al Gore said.
Companies will provide information on those chemicals that
have an annual production of more than 1 million pounds. About
3,000 chemicals would fall under the testing agreement.
Test results will be made available on the Internet and
testing of the high-volume chemicals should be completed by
2004.
If companies do not voluntarily provide the needed
information in a timely manner, Gore said the EPA will use its
regulatory authority to require more testing.
The EPA said it will propose mandatory testing next spring
for chemicals not covered by the voluntary program.
