Citizens' Action Groups Challenge Industrial And Political Executives
Irresponsibility of Limit Values (Standards) to be demonstrated:
Executives invited to expose themselves for a short time to Sub-Limit-
Value Mobile Phone Radiation and win 20,000 DeutschMarks !
It meanwhile surprises no-one: Mobile phone operators are extending
their networks daily in pursuit of their self-assigned mission to
establish a modern information and communication technology. At the
same time it is becoming clear that while the present "industrially"
prefabricated limit values are sufficient to protect our body against
excessive warming, they cannot guarantee for the unimpaired
functioning of all biological processes in humans and animals. The
number of scientific studies and insights gained in empirical
medicine which point to serious biological effects resulting from
this technology is growing daily, but the message is simply being
ignored. And the ever more frequent complaints from citizens living
close to GSM (DCS) cell phone transmitters about health problems are
being dismissed as "hysterical" or interpreted as "unfortunate"
isolated cases.
The pattern is always the same. A new technology or product is
introduced without an earnest risk assessment having been made and
negligently disregarding the possibility of side-effects. Early
critics are methodically silenced. Then it takes at least ten years
until people start to notice, long enough to turn in a good profit.
After that the responsible companies change their oratory, asserting
that it had been known all along how dangerous the "stuff" was.
Thalidomide, asbestos, formalde-hyde, these are just a few of the sad
chapters in the story of the neglect of public health risks. Those
affected and the public at large are usually left alone to cope with
the damage.
The situation with electromagnetic felds from mobile phone
installations appears very similar to what we have had in the past
and has meanwhile become intolerable. The unrestrained extension of
cell phone networks (transmitter stations) and the widespread use of
handies pose a threat to the health of humans, animals and plants.
Every person‘s health is at risk! What has become of our right to
freedom from bodily harm?
On the occasion of the "Buergerforum Elektrosmog 1999", to be held by
the Federal Environmental Ministry on October 19 and 20, 1999 in
Bonn, the "Buergerwelle e.V.", roof organi-sation of citizens and
civil action groups for protection against EMF exposure, will
challenge decision makers from the mobile phone industry, radiation
protection authorities, and politics with a startling offer.
Whoever agrees to expose him or herself to continuous mobile phone
radiation for only 10 days under controlled conditions and is found
to show no signs of health impairment during or shortly after
exposure will receive DM 20 000 for his show of courage.
"Now we will see how much the responsible industrial executives,
radiation protec-tion authorities and politicians trust the limit
values which they have declared fit for the general public," says
Buergerwelle-spokesman Siegfried Zwerenz.
