.......From EMF-L........

.......These studies were both recently reported here on EMF-L, but
Louis Slesin's opinion about their significance adds more to the story....

Still, the U.S. press (and the U.S. Government) will either ignore
these results ... or talk about "what they do _not_ prove."

What they _DO_ reinforce, of course, is the FACT of biological activity
as a result of EMF exposure -- which should be "put together" with an
abundance of epidemiological data to reach "conclusions" about badly
needed public policy.......guru.....

Subject: Two New Important Studies

Dear Colleagues:

Two important papers have just been published. One is on the effects of
wireless phone radiation on sleep, and the other is on the possible link
between power line radiation and cancer.

A world-renowned sleep laboratory at the University of Zurich has found
that exposing volunteers to digital mobile phone radiation (GSM) for 30
minutes while awake significantly alters their EEG activity after they
fall asleep, compared to unexposed controls. These results complement an
earlier study at the same lab in which subjects were exposed while
sleeping. (We reported these initial findings in our November/December
1999 issue.)

The Swiss researchers conclude: "The changes of brain function induced by
pulsed high-frequency electromagnetic fields outlast the exposure period."

In an accompanying commentary, Dr. Michael Petrides notes that, "The
currently available literature suggests that some aspects of cognitive
function and some direct measures of brain physiology may be affected by
exposure to electromagnetic fields of the type emitted by cellular
telephones."

In an unusual move, the journal "NeuroReport" is making the complete text
of this paper and the accompanying editorial (both from the October 20
issue) available free of charge on its Web site,
.
Go to "Online Articles" at the bottom of the page and then go to "Issue
15," 2000. Note also the press release on the journal's home page.

In a startling development, researchers led by Dr. James Trosko of
Michigan State University have shown that power-frequency magnetic fields
can affect immature blood cells in a manner similar to that of chemical
cancer promoters. Especially surprising is that the team observed significant
changes at levels as low as 40 milligauss and observed a dose-response
relationship. These results are described in a paper in the October issue
of "Environmental Health Perspectives," which is published by the National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The full text of the paper is unfortunately not available for free on
line. But you can access the abstract at:
.
And you can read the press release from the Michigan State press office
at: .

Of course, MICROWAVE NEWS will have detailed coverage of both studies and
their implications in our November/December 2000 issue.

Meanwhile, we have now placed the Commentary, "What 4 Milligauss Means,"
from our current issue (September/October) on our Web site,
, together with the first few paragraphs of our
lead news story, "Leading Epidemiologists See Childhood Cancer Risk at
4 mG." These address two new combined analyses of EMF-childhood leukemia
studies which have recently been published in the "British Journal of
Cancer" and in "Epidemiology."

Also available at no charge is a Commentary on the standard-setting
process for exposures to RF/MW radiation, "IEEE's Health Standards Panel:
Major Changes Are Needed." We are continuing to upgrade our Web site and
these items can now be downloaded as a PDF file.

In addition, for those who have not visited our site in a while, be
advised that you can now go there and get a free sample issue, the
May/June issue, as a PDF file.

Those of you who wish to get the complete September/October issue can do
so for $25.00 (less than half-price).

For those of you who are not yet among our regular readers, we encourage
you to subscribe. If you do, we will send you our September/October issue
for FREE and start your subscription with November/December.

Best,

Louis Slesin
Editor
