Roy,

I can finally respond to a comment made by Alasdair over 5 weeks ago that I
filed away for when I got around to it.

As described below, I have found a commercially available pager-sized
microwave alarm on the web. I wonder how Alasdair's home-built model
differs from this one? Has anyone on your list tried it? (I have NOT, but
I am considering it.)

Alasdair Philips wrote "People ARE getting more self-conscious about using
them [cell phones]. Whereas not long ago, on a train, people would be
proud to use one in full view, often now in the UK if one rings everyone
looks round to see who "has farted" (so to speak) and the guilty party
usually slinks down to the end of the carriage away from everyone else to
accept the call! We need to encourage people to feel bad about owning and
using their cell-phones. I carry a small microwave alarm I have built and
if anyone uses a phone within about 10 feet of me it emits a shrill alarm.
When I explain what it is to all seated around me I usually get more
support than abuse for my stance. (p.s.: no they are not commercially
available yet, sorry!)"

MICROALERT PORTABLE RADIO / MICROWAVE ALARM

" The MicroAlert™ radio / microwave alarm is the size of a small pager.
This unique detector is ideal for anyone trying to find out exactly WHAT'S
emitting radio or microwaves, whether in HIDDEN locations or in plain sight!

A clear loud beep indicates radio waves stronger than the level you select.
If you move closer to the radio / microwave source, the beep sounds more
frequently, and will ultimately become a solid tone if you move in even
closer to the source. As you move away from the source, the beeping will
stop. Minimum sensitivity is only .001 milliwatt per cm2, making it much
more sensitive than the radio / microwave setting on the original TriField
Meter!

At the highest sensitivity, it will detect a typical cellular phone tower
1/2 mile away, a typical analog cell phone 40 feet distant, a digital phone
at 20 feet, and a microwave oven (in use) 10-50 feet away (usually with a
less sensitive setting). The device is most sensitive from 100 MHz to 5
GHz, thus ordinary cordless phones cannot cause much interference
(detectable at about 2 feet).

The MicroAlert Alarm is shipped set so STANDARD sensitivity threshold is
about 10 microwatts / cm2 and HIGH sensitivity is approximately 3
microwatts / cm2. Sensitivity can be enhanced to 1 microwatt / cm2 by
"flipping" the cover (STAR TREK style) and magnified to 1/3 microwatt / cm2
by flipping the cover once more. Radio / microwave surveillance "bugs" /
devices can be detected within one to two feet of the instrument.

The switch on top lets you select standard sensitivity, high sensitivity or
"off". A control on the side can raise or lower the overall sensitivity.
The unit chirps once each time you turn it on to indicate that the battery
is good. With the sensitivity on "high", you'll be amazed where and how
frequently you find radio / microwaves!

The MicroAlert™ comes with a one-year warranty, replaceable battery, and a
pocket clip.

Astonishment will permeate your brain as you uncover sources of STRONG
radio and microwaves in places you'd never suspected, like some wall
outlets and yet not ALL wall outlets in a building or office area.

A great dinner conversation piece in restaurants when someone at the next
table uses a cell phone and sets off your MicroAlert (IF it happens to be
ON), gently letting the caller know they are "invading your air space."

Available in black, gray and off-white. Inquire via e-mail for information
and pricing on forthcoming specialized versions of the MicroAlert."
