I guess you are about seven years older than I, and I too enjoyed watching baseball more than other sports. I watched a semi-pro team called the "Nashville Vols" during my college years in the second half of the fifties, but my major league watching has been restricted to TV. Someday, though, I am going to see the Cubs in person, now that I live near Chicago. More power to both Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. They seem to be decent young men, as well as great athletes. I also share your optimism about America, though I would like to see a little common sense on the part of our senators and representatives. Senator Bill Frist (Tennessee heart surgeon) is a good man, and I would like to see him informed of the dangers of unregulated (or inadequately regulated) EMF producers - especially the telecommunications industry. Note that Illinois Senator Carol Mosely-Braun is supporting the Leahy bill to try to reestablish the rights of communities to deviate from the FCC standards. I plan to attend half of the Tucson meeting on "Annual Review of Bioeffects Research" (at my own expense - travel and lodging, no conference fee). I have recently met Libby Kelley and Janie Blanchard in San Francisco, and I talked with Dr. Carl Blackman (of the EPA Laboratory in North Carolina) for two hours on the phone recently. It would be good if you or one of your associates could get to the Tucson meeting. The NIEHS people who got out the EMF RAPID report certainly deserve some commendation and support from those concerned about EMF bioeffects, since there enough people in government ready to smash any further developments construed as unfavorable to the power industry and the global telecommunications industry. Apparently, the government bias began under the previous administration, when Dr. Alan Bromley was the presidential science advisor. He was (in my opinion) unduly influenced by his Yale colleague, Dr. Robert Adair. What I can't understand is why the Clinton administration has continued this bias - especially in suppressing the earlier EPA report on EMF bioeffects. Incidentally, Dr. John Goldsmith's meritorious presentation in San Francisco was accompanied by booklets compiled from several of his papers, and these can be purchased from Libby Kelley's organization. I have one and heartily recommend it to your readers. Dr. Goldsmith made at least two seminal points (paraphrased by me): 1) We should stop concentrating primarily on whether EMF causes cancer (since the cancer latency period is as long as 15-20 years) and realize that harmful EMF bioeffects include a whole range of illnesses, some of which are devastating. 2) we shouldn't arbitrarily divide up EMF into power line frequencies and microwave frequencies, but rather realize that the whole spectrum of EMF has significant bioeffects - some beneficial and some harmful. Apparently, the next big push of the cell phone manufacturers is going to be wireless networks for computer users, using modems based on digital wireless technology. One of the sub societies in our local chapter of the IEEE is presenting a seminar on this topic at Lucent Technology in Naperville, Illinois. This is one of Lucent's strong commercial interests, and I look forward to finding out more about their plans. I will tell you if I find out anything significant. -- ---- Bill P.
