......Folks, to avoid confusion -- this study (below) has been reported
before on EMF-L.... It was also cited by Louis Slesin in his excellent
editorial about the "bad job" of reporting we got from the press on
the Liburdy affair -- the press zeroed in on the 'marginally relevant'
Liburdy matter while ignoring other, bigger news of the same week. The
study mentioned below (which is "recent" if not "new") is one of the
examples cited by Louis....

It is good to get some more on the study, which (I believe) had not
previously been published??? Note, the information below assigns a risk
factor of 2.0 to 4.0 as a result of higher EMF exposure!!!..... That is
remarkably consistent with other study findings, going as far back as
the Wertheimer-Leeper study in 1979.......

As I wrote previously (at the time I was reviewing the NIEHS report by
Ken Olden), I believe that many of the scientists who were present at
the Minneapolis (Brooklyn Park) meeting would have voted that EMF is
a "probable" carcinogen ... if they had been given a 'secret ballot'.....
(See also, my essay, "Inertia and Malfeasance" on my web site.....)

Cheerio....

Dear Roy and all,

You may be interested to know that in the latest University of Toronto
magazine (Autumn 1999 Volume XXVII Number 1 -- page 7) there is an
article under the general heading "Leading Edge" entitled "Links to
Leukemia." I am an alumnus of U of T, so I just phoned there to try to get
more information on this study from Steven de Sousa who submitted it. When
I have more, I will share it with members of EMF-L.

Links to Leukemia

Researchers at the University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children
have reported an association between magnetic field exposure and the risk
of developing childhood leukemia. Measuring magnetic and electrical field
exposure both inside and outside children's homes from such sources as
power lines and house wiring, Lois Green of the department of public health
sciences and her team found that children with leukemia were two to four
times more likely than other children to have experienced high levels of
exposure to magnetic fields. They also found that children who were
diagnosed with leukemia before they turned six had experienced higher
levels of exposure prenatally and before the age of two compared to the
children who did not have leukemia. The researchers compared exposures of
201 children, who were diagnosed with leukemia at the Hospital for Sick
Children between birth and age 14, with 406 children from the population
without leukemia.
