........This is a most welcome message!! I hope many of you will
follow with help and advice, as requested.

Tell me, Enid, am I right to interpret the Trust's actions as a tacit
admission that, "We may have a problem here. Let's stop the future
build-out of towers until we have better information about the possible
consequences??"

If so, then why isn't that same good sense spreading all over the rest
of Canada??

Cheerio........guru........

from IROCA ......Island Residents Opposed to Cell-phone Antennae

Dear Roy, we want to be sure we're ready and armed for the next
stage...which will surely come some day...any suggestions ?
Having obtained a promise from the Islands Trust, ( our
governing body, ) that they will initiate a protocol ( similar to that in
the Salzburg Resolution ) for dealing with applications by
telecommunications companies wishing to install cell-phone antennae, we find
ourselves at a crossroads in our campaign. The Trust is giving us the right
to public discussion regarding any further overtures from the Industry, but
we have to set standards and be able to come forward with 'as near' proof as
we can get , showing that the technology in question is harmful to life
forms, particularly human.
At the moment the telecommunications company which planned to erect an
antennae close to us has departed the scene, saying they don't need the
'aggro' here, and have lots of customers (unfortunately)
'clamouring for their services' elsewhere! We're not deluding ourselves
into thinking that they, or others of their ilk, won't be back at some point
in the future.
Our governing body is hesitant to change by-laws which then would obstruct
these companies, but they have consented to include wording in the Official
Community Plan, which gives us the chance to send a strong public message.
This may prove, once more, to be a deterrent should the telecommunications
companies come knocking on our door again in the future.
The Islands Trust have decided to place a moratorium on any applicatioons
for such installations until the special clause has been incorporated into
the O.C.P. for which small mercy we are duly grateful, but this doesn't
mean that our watchdogs can sleep. Having collected over a thousand
signatures from residents of Salt Spring who are against the installation of
cell-phone towers on this island, we feel we owe it to them ,as well as
ourselves, to maintain a firm vigilance and be ready to repel any attempts
to thrust this uncalled-for technology upon us.....
the voice of the people is all we have to fight with, but it
can be a mighty voice !

l would like to add that we all appreciate what you are doing for the World
!...l'm positive that some day we will find a solution....let's hope it
won't be too late to shore up this crumbling edifice !
Sincerely, Enid Turner for ' IROCA'.
