Subject: Info sought on EMF effects on marine life (Maisch). Regards Don A very tricky question: I am seeking any information, or directions to where such info. may be obtained, on the possible effects of an underwater DC transmission line on skarks & other marine animals for the Tasmanian Fishing Industry Council The line in question is a proposed underwater main conductor between Tasmania and mainland Australia. the line is rated at 480 MW, with a maximum short-term rating of 600MW. It is a DC line which will be located just under the loose sediments on the bottom of the Bass Strait. An ground electrode (anode) will also be used which will be buried in the sea bed on each side of the strait so the earth is part of the circuit. Questions: 1) The proponents claim that there would be no electric field but would this necessarly be the case? There would obviously be a magnetic field. For the Olympics ocean swimming events divers are swimming with an electric device designed to repel sharks. It is well known that skarks are very sensitive to electric fields but I do not know about magnetic fields. The fishing council was concerned about the possibility of an undersea electric field coming from this cable/anode acting as a 'fence' to stop migrations for sharks & other marine animals moving along the botton? Any assistence, especially contacts with suitable marine researchers would be greatly appreciated.
