Date: Sat, 2 Sep 2000 10:01:01 -0500 From: "Kurt Gutknecht" To: References: <39B0D261.7781C8CF@emfguru.com> I respectfully disagree with Ms. Lundquist's assessment that a "Nuremberg Trial" approach would not be appropriate and that targeting professional societies such as the IEEE will mitigate the problem. I am no expert in the history of science, but I doubt whether scientific principles have previously been assaulted and distorted on such a scale as this. No matter what the IEEE does or doesn't do, its members are captives of powerful corporate interests. Time after time, its members knowingly violate engineering principles endorsed by the organization because they are paid to do so. And it will not make a whit of difference whether Ms. Lundquist establishes "a new profession of bioelectromagnetic hygiene" because well-funded corporate interests will continue to hire "scientists" to distort and question the findings. In today's environment, science counts for much less than perception. The utilities have massive resources to allocate to public relations and obfuscation. They anticipate every criticism and distort every adverse finding. They monitor this list, and are content to let it continue as long as it doesn't pose any real threat. Based on the human suffering I have witnessed over the past 18 months and the egregious (and obvious) distortions promulgated by utility employees, nothing short of a Nuremberg Trial would be appropriate. This issue concerns fundamental principles of democracy and human decency. The belief that another professional organization such as that proposed by Ms. Lundquist will address the problem is a dangerously naive hypothesis. The utilities will fuel hysteria over the so-called "energy shortages" to relegate health concerns to the back burner. The only hope of stopping the utility juggernaut lies with public demands for justice.
