Since Swiss Radio International is still on air, it's impossible that
the Schwarzenburg transmitter's break-down was "without compensation".
In fact, the transmissions were just moved abroad, to more powerful
transmitters. NIMBYism at work here... (shall the foreigners have
the EMR of Swiss Radio International !)

What this "heroic testimonial" also didn't mention is the real reason
why Schwarzenburg was shut down: Not because the existing radiation was
deemed too high, but because it had become too low to "compete" with the
internationally increased Blue World of other short-wave transmitters!
The Schwarzenburg transmitter was technically very obsolete (from the
1950ies) and would have had to be extended by a factor of 6, to be able to
compete. Also, the geographical location of Schwarzenburg was suboptimal
internationally (it had to be chosen *within* Switzerland during WW2).
Hence, the government decided that the extension of the Schwarzenburg
transmitter wouldn't make sense, so the transmitter was shut down.
(The basic decision of non-extension goes back to 1975, the heroic club
of Mr. Jakob was founded in 1995.)

Cheerio,
Chris
