Welcome to WaveGuide!

[2-5-98] new Somebody is listening in Vermont ... and watch for an updated and improved WaveGuide in the next few weeks ...

If you are looking for a simple answer to the question, "Are EMFs going to give me or my children cancer?", I am sorry, but you are not going to find them here; for the simple reason that there are no simple answers. This site is not about proving a link between EMR and health problems, that is left to those more qualified in that area.

Rather, the purpose of this site to to examine WHY there are no simple answers; why public policy makers are living in denial, given the increasingly weighty body of evidence that suggests association of various disease-states with exposure to various parts of the spectrum of Non-Ionizing ElectroMagnetic Radiation, (NIEMR.) Why is it that the Federal Government and Industry are trying control the body of Scientific Knowledge by controlling research funding, and why are they simultaneously calling for policy based on sound scientific research, and curtailing funding for that same scientific research? Why is the Federal Government ignoring the recommendations made by it's own appointees in the area of EMR Biological effects, (NCRP, NEMFAC)?

"Science is a hard taskmaster, and in the light of mounting evidence that suggestions of toxicity are for the most part ultimately confirmed by painstaking scientific inquiry, perhaps it is time to reexamine whether scientific standards of proof of causality - and waiting for the bodies to fall - ought not to give way to more preventative health policies that are satisfied by more realistic conventions and that lead to action sooner."

From an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine, April 1987
While my personal feelings are that policy-makers are dropping the ball on this issue, my goal is to link to sites that represent as many perspectives on this issue as I can find. Critical thinkers can then pick information and arguments that meet their own criteria. While it could be argued that some of the information I link to could be considered anecdotal, or even "junk science", it is my belief that it is important to give audience to a wider range of perspectives when there is so much controversy, and so much obfuscation of truth.

I wish to express my appreciation to all the people who maintain the sites I have pointers to, those who have made suggestions that have resulted in improvements to WaveGuide in format or content, and to those of you who have expressed your appreciation for this site's existence.

My Qualifications

I am a lay-person. I have no formal training in bioelectromagnetics, engineering, or medicine. My training is in electronics, and computer science. My interest in the issue of EMF Bioeffects arose from an experience our community had with a cellular carrier in 1992. Because of my vocation, computer and network support, my interest continues ...

This site is maintained by me, in my spare time. I receive no sponsorship of any kind.

Official Position

The official position is:

"There is NO DANGER from Electro-Magnetic Fields."

Some questions addressed by this site, and by sites linked to from here, are:

  • Whom determines the "Official Position"? (Are they qualified?)
  • Do they really believe there are no risks in EMF exposure?
  • Do you believe this? (Most important, should you believe this?)
  • How many types of EMF are there, and are their bioeffects different?
  • What is the history of public health policy in the US? For instance, how many other things later found to be harmful have been officially declared safe, (DDT, DES, thalidomide, ionizing radiation), and how many times has the Federal Government used citizens as test subjects without permission?
  • Why is the science so confusing, and the politics so controversial?
The Federal Government and Big Business have a lot at stake. So do you ...

Grassroots

... but I'd be willing to bet your agenda is different than theirs. You might be interested to find out what "safe" and "risk" mean to them; I am quite sure they mean different things to you.

There are a lot of people who don't believe EMFs are safe. That is what this site is about.

The Top 6 Resources

These resources are picked as much for the people behind them as for the information available through them. These people are all very committed to this cause, and have been very helpful to others.

Bridlewood Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) Information Service
An excellent site. Check out the extensive, comprehensive, up-to-date bibliography of EMF references, available at this site. Follow the link and check the link to EMF Bibliography. Maintained by Richard W. Woodley for the Bridlewood Residents Hydro Line Committee.

EMF-L, A Mail Reflector Concerned With EMF Bioeffects
"The purpose of this list is to create a forum for lay people (and scientists) to discuss and share (in non-technical language) information about the growing concern regarding the safety and hazards of Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Radiation." Follow the link to view some selected digests. To subscribe, follow the link, and follow the directions. Moderated by The EMF Guru, Roy Beavers, who says "Tell the folks: That is a STRAIGHT TALKIN' group. Not worrying about POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. They are trying to "shine the light" of truth upon the EMF health issue insofar as they can perceive it!! Everyone is welcome. Join up and "have your say" or ask your question."

The EMR Alliance A Non-Profit Grassroots Organization
"The EMR Alliance will continue the committment of educating and informing the public about the biological effects, adverse health hazards and environmental impact of EMF radiation." They are currently distributing a free pamphlet titled "Cell Tower Static, Consumers Cause Interference in the Race to a Wireless World." Cathy Bergman.

FEB The Swedish Association for the Electrically and VDT Injured
A list of International links on a Swedish server maintained by Clas Tegenfeld for the benefit of people harmed by EMF exposure. Many links, most in English. "On this server you will find information in English and/or Swedish about the 'Electrical Oversensitivity' or 'Electrical Hypersensitivity' phenomenon."

Microwave News
"Microwave News covers the health and safety issues related to exposure to electromagnetic radiation. Includes electromagnetic fields (EMFs) power lines, cellular phones and radar." A mature and respected publication, edited by Louis Slesin. Called "The world's most authoritative source on EMF health risks." by the Washington Journalism Review

PowerWatch Living with Electricity
"Are you, or your family, suffering from chronic health problems ? including Leukaemia, cancer, depression, M.E., slow healing, electrical hypersensitivity (which can be a cause of headaches, lethargy, tingling skin, eye problems). Links have been shown between these problems and the electromagnetic fields in which you may be living." An interesting Who's Who of some EMF researchers.
