Library

And Reading Room

Here you can find "reprints" at this site of articles I found of particular interest, links to articles at other sites, and a couple links to bibliographies of EMF/EMR sources.

Sections of the Library

  • Background Information
Here you can find out about the electromagnetic spectrum, electricity, magnetism, and the technical language used to describe them.

  • History and Overview of the Controversy
Here you will find information about how the controversy developed, and points of interest along the way.

  • Where We are Today
Information of a more recent, or topical nature.

  • Bibliography
A small bibliography of recommended printed matter. Now has on-line purchasing in Association with Amazon.com.

Background

  • ARRL FAQ on Radiation Safety
The American Radio Relay League FAQ on EMR bioeffects. As a group studied by epidemiologists, Ham Radio operators have a vested interest. This is a pretty good overview, but the intended audience is Ham Radio Operators, so it gets technical in spots.

  • Average Exposures from Common Household Appliances
The IEEE published this table of average electromagnetic exposures from common household appliances. There is also a CGI script that allows you to select an appliance, and see magnetic field measurements for several types of that appliance, at several distances; the data used is from an EMF RAPID database.

  • New [5-15-99] EMF Bioeffects 101
I finally got around to modifying this primer from the old version of WaveGuide. Provides a quick overview.

  • Evaluating an Argument
How to evaluate an argument for deductive validity and inductive strength. Increase the strength of your own arguments, while undermining those of your oponents.

  • Glossary of EMF and RFR terms
A glossary of terms from physics, electronics, telecommunications, and biology.

  • NCRP Draft Recommendation on EMF Exposure Guidelines
MicroWave News has posted Section 8 of the June 13, 1995 draft report of NCRP Scientific Committee 89-3 on Extremely Low Frequency Electric and Magnetic Fields, which contains its conclusions and recommendations.

  • New [4-14-99] OET Bulletin No. 65 Evaluating Compliance With FCC Guidelines for Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields
This revised OET Bulletin 65 has been prepared to provide assistance in determining whether proposed or existing transmitting facilities, operations or devices comply with limits for human exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The bulletin offers guidelines and suggestions for evaluating compliance. However, it is not intended to establish mandatory procedures, and other methods and procedures may be acceptable if based on sound engineering practice. NOTE: This is an Adobe PDF document, it requires Acrobat Reader software to view it.

  • The Precautionary Principle
This is a reprint of Rachel's Environment and Health Weekly #586. In part, it is about the scientists, government officials, lawyers, and labor and grass-roots environmental activists who met January 23-25 at Wingspread in Racine, Wisconsin to define and discuss the precautionary principle. Here is an excerpt from the Wingspread Statement on the Precautionary Principle:

"We believe existing environmental regulations and other decisions, particularly those based on risk assessment, have failed to protect adequately human health and the environment --the larger system of which humans are but a part."

  • Telecommunications Act of 1996
The Federal Communications Commission page on the Telecommunications Act of 1996.

  • U.S. Senate Information for EMF Activists
Useful contact information for relevant U.S. Senate members.

History and Overview

  • A Clear Call - B. Blake Levitt
An absolutely superb overview of the Cellular Antenna siting controversy. I highly recommend taking the time to read this article. In a studied, non-inflamitory way, the author explores the current issues relevant to cellular siting: preemption of local control, regulating bodies, a survey of current biological studies.

  • Bird Kills due to Towers
The Avian Community is being adversely affected by the rapid proliferation of Telecommunications Towers, which are resulting in alarming numbers of bird kills. This letter describes how 5,000 to 10,000 Lapland Longspurs were killed at one antenna site, in one night.

  • Brodeur Testifies before the Nebraska Legislature
Transcript of Paul Brodeur's testimony before the Nebraska Legislature, where he provides a preponderance of peer-reviewed studies linking cancer and power lines.

  • Cellular Towers - A Medical Issue - B. Blake Levitt
Another excellent article, which in a shorter, more focused format, covers much of the health-specific material in A Clear Call above.

  • EMF and the Question of Risk - Michael Milburn, Ph.D.
The heart of the EMF issue comes down to a simple question: what are the risks of exposure to electromagnetic fields? Unfortunately, while the question is simple, the answer is much more challenging. Citizens of the modern, industrial world are exposed to a potpourri of nonionizing electromagnetic energy and until recently little was known about the types of exposure experienced at home and on the job. Even less is known about the biological effects of this kind of exposure.

  • History of Cellular technology
A history of the development of early radio telephone and Cellular systems.

  • History of the TCA of 1996 - Marjorie Lundquist, Ph.D., C.I.H.
Dr. Lundquist examines the History of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, and the head-in-the-sand politicians that voted for it. (Contains a list of those few who did not.)

  • New [4-17-99] Historic Preservation Compliance
It is important to know that a historic property doesn't have to actually be on the National Register of Historic Places before the environmental assessment requirement is triggered. If a property is eligible for inclusion on the National Register, that is enough. This calls into question an even greater range of properties. If you think a property might be eligible, the State Historic Preservation Office becomes involved to assist in the identification and nomination process.

  • NEMFAC Letter on the NAS Report
A letter from the chair of the National Electric and Magnetic Fields Advisory Committee (to EMF RAPID), Shirley Linde, regarding the NAS/NRC report being premature, as the research wasn't finished yet, and probably won't be after the mis-interpreted findings are widespread by the news media.

  • Unvoiced Conclusion - Marjorie Lundquist, Ph.D., C.I.H.
A typical example of a conclusion not supported by the premises ... Dr. Lundquist shares the Unspoken Conclusion of the NAS/NRC report, which was quite different than what was packaged and spoon-fed to the press.

  • New [5-11-99] What are the Studies Telling Us?
CCWTI / Sage Associates Table of Bioeffects Studies -- I want to thank Libby Kelley at the California Council on Wireless Technology Impacts for passing this along to me, and Cindy Sage of Sage Associates, for tabulating this Important information. The following studies indicate biological effects at exposure levels far below what would be explained by "thermal effects", and well within the range people are commonly exposed to every day.

Where We Are Today

  • New [4-17-99] Dr Henry Lai's Vienna Paper
Dr Henry Lai's 'Vienna paper' on the possible effects of RFR (cell phones and towers)... It is a scientific paper, but it is well written -- and readable by those of us who are not scientists...

  • New [4-18-99] Fifth Estate Cone of Silence
Transcript of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Fifth Estate program of February 9, 1999, the segment entitled "Cone of Silence." Contains interviews with numerous prominent researchers.

  • New [4-20-99] Lloyd's Underwriter Refuses to Insure Against Health Risk
Concern about the safety of mobile phones has prompted a leading Lloyd's underwriter to refuse to insure phone manufacturers against the risk of damage to users' health. The move comes amid mounting concern about the industry's influence on research into the long-term effects of using a mobile. The London market provides insurance for everything from aircraft to footballers' legs. But fears that mobile phones will be linked to illnesses such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease have prompted John Fenn, of underwriting group Stirling, to refuse to cover manufacturers against the risk of being sued if mobiles turn out to cause long-term damage.

  • New [5-28-99] Rachel's #652 - The Waning Days of Risk Assessment
Risk assessment is a decision-making technique that first came into use during the presidency of Jimmy Carter, who was trained as a nuclear engineer. At its best, risk assessment is an honest attempt to find a rational basis for decisions, by analyzing the available scientific evidence. In theory it is still an attractive ideal -- to make rational decisions based on scientific evidence -- because in principle it should allow diverse parties to agree on what needs to be done. However, 20 years of actual practice have badly tarnished the ideal of risk assessment and have sullied the reputation of many a risk assessor.

  • J.R.H. 109 Somebody is Listening in Vermont
Here is the Towers Preemption Resolution as it was introduced in the Vermont House and referred to the Committee on Natural Resources and Energy.

  • The Ugly Secret EMF Epidemiology Studies are Misleading Us
This report [was] prepared immediately following [Roy Beaver's] return from the San Antonio (Jan 12-14, 1998) meeting of the EMF RAPID review process, which is being managed and conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The following is a shortened and revised version of Mr. Beavers' paper "San Antonio meeting report" and "Blue World" revisited.

Thanks

I wish to thank Cathy Bergman for permission to reprint the materials that originally appeared in Network News, published by the EMR Alliance, and to ALL the contributing authors. Without your contributions, I would be struggling to achieve a much lower bar ...
