Roy, feel free to post this. It is not yet out of date. -- Marjorie
----------------------------------------
General Information for Activists from Marjorie Lundquist - June 1997
U.S. Congress: Senate
When the Republicans have control of the Senate--that is, when they out-
number the Democrats--then the chairmen of all the Senate Committees and
Subcommittees are the ranking Republican member; the ranking Democratic
member is then called the "ranking minority member". When the Democrats
gain control of the Senate, then the chairmanships all switch, so that
the committee and subcommittee chairmen are the ranking Democratic mem-
bers: the former ranking minority member becomes chairman and the former
chairman becomes the new ranking minority member. -- Marjorie Lundquist
Right now, in 1977, the Republicans have control of the U.S. Senate, so
all committee and subcommittee chairmen are Republicans.--M. Lundquist
There is a medical doctor in the U.S. Senate: Bill Frist (R-TN). His
name is starred in the lists below. --M. Lundquist

*Bill Frist is a physician (heart surgeon). He is the only medical doctor
in the Senate. He is a Republican, so when the Republicans are in power
he chairs 2 subcommittees, one on science and one on public health.
Bill Frist (R-TN) and Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) have jointly cre-
ated the bipartisan Science and Technology Caucus. The Caucus held its
first meeting in February, 1997.
Bill Frist is a key person in the Senate for anyone with public health
concerns to interact with--especially while the Republicans have control
of the Senate!
In Bill Frist's office there are a variety of staff people with different
responsibilities. Here is a list for the Labor/Human Resources Committee
(public health and safety):
Susan Ramthun - Staff Director - Health
Jennifer Van Horn - Prof. Staff - Health
David Larson - Prof. Staff - Disability; FDA
Katie Braden - Prof. Staff - Labor; safety
& for the Science, Technology and Space Subcommittee of the Committee on
Commerce, Science and Transportation:
Tom Wood - Congressional Fellow - Science and technology
Michael Miller - Legislative Assist't - Science and technology (et al.)
